How To Clean OXO Coffee Maker The Right Way

Brewing coffee at home with an OXO coffee maker is a great way to save money instead of buying a cup of joe at a coffee shop. However, it does require some upkeep if you want your coffee to keep tasting great. It is important to that you learn how to clean OXO coffee maker 9-Cup and 8-Cup models the right way. How To Clean OXO Coffee Maker Daily

Keeping up with daily cleaning for your OXO coffee maker is important. When you are done brewing coffee, remove the used grounds and dirty filter. Wipe down any residue in the basket. Clean the exterior of the brewer using a damp cloth. Never use a cleaning spray or other chemicals or any abrasive tool as those can damage the brewer.

Use hot water and a gentle dishwashing liquid to clean all removable parts at the end of each day. Be sure to handwash the carafe and lid since they are not dishwasher safe. Other removable parts can go in the top rack of the dishwasher. Cleaning these after each use will get rid of any coffee oils or residue that could impact the taste of your coffee the next day. If there are any stains in your carafe, try soaking it overnight with water and a little bit of dishwasher detergent.

OXO brewers will show a blinking light when a deep clean is needed. On the 9 cup Oxo coffee maker, it will be in the shape of a triangle with an exclamation point. 9-Cup OXO Coffee Maker Cleaning Instructions

To descale your machine BEFORE the red exclamation point warning light has come on:

  • Power off the coffee maker
  • Mix the solution with water per the instructions on your bottle.
  • Fill the water tank to the max line. Never overfill!
  • Ensure there is no coffee or filter in the machine.
  • Hold down the OXO button while plugging in the machine. In the LED ring, you will see a 9 appear and the ring will turn red.
  • Press the OXO button to begin the cycle.
  • When done, run a 5 to 9 cup cycle with water only. Discard the hot water after use.

To descale your machine AFTER the red exclamation point warning light has come on:

  • Mix the solution with water per the instructions on your bottle.
  • Fill the reservoir to the max line. Never overfill!
  • Ensure there is no coffee or filter in the machine.
  • Turn the dial to the right until 9 is displayed in the LED ring and the ring turns red.
  • Press the OXO button to run the machine and begin the cycle.
  • After the cycle is over, run a 5 to 9 cup cycle with water only. Discard the water after use.

8-Cup OXO Coffee Maker Cleaning Instructions

  • Mix the solution with water per the instructions on your bottle.
  • Fill the water tank to the max line. Never overfill!
  • Ensure there is no coffee or filter in the machine.
  • Screw on carafe lip and place empty carafe under the Oxo brew basket.
  • Slide the switch to carafe mode. Press the power button, then press the clean button.
  • After 25 minutes, the process will be done. The machine will chime and the light will turn off.
  • Run a rinse cycle by filling the water tank with only fresh water. Then, start a 5 to 8 cup brew cycle. Finally, discard the water.

How To Clean OXO Burr Coffee Grinder

If you use the conical burr coffee grinder from OXO too, you’ll also need to clean that. Just follow these steps. Note that the hopper and grounds container must be washed by hand. Only the coffee scoop is dishwasher safe.

  • Empty the bean hopper and then run the grinder for 10 seconds. This will clear any grounds or beans from the burrs and chute.
  • Unplug the grinder.
  • Remove the hopper by turning the knob inside the burr counterclockwise until you hear it click.
  • Clear any coffee beans that you may find between the grinder burrs.
  • Remove the upper burr by lifting the metal burr handle, twisting it counterclockwise, then pulling it straight up. You won’t be able to remove the lower burr.
  • Get a dry, small bristle brush and use it to clear the burrs and grounds chute. Make sure it is dry! You never want to use water or any cleaning agent inside the grinder.
  • Return the upper burr to its position. To insert it again, line up the indents with the tabs inside the lower burr. Then turn it clockwise until you hear it click into place. When you pull the handle up, the burr should not move. That means you replaced it correctly.
  • Wipe the grinder base and body with a soft damp cloth.
  • Replace the hopper. Align the tabs of the hopper with the notches in the grinder. Gently press down and then turn clockwise. You will hear the hopper lock into place.
